Isle of Palms (IOP) is a casual beach town comprised of oceanfront condos, waterfront estates, and interior lot homes. All of the waterfront homes are built with coastal construction while the interior homes are an eclectic mix of raised crossbases, ranch-style homes, and lowcountry architecture. The interior homes are an easy walk or bike ride to the white sand beach while oceanfront homes have a private and a direct pathway to the Atlantic Ocean. The island is surrounded by the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, navigable Intracoastal Waterway, and beautiful but dangerous Breach Inlet. The two points of ingress and egress lead to nearby Sullivan’s Island in one direction and to its anchor city, Mt. Pleasant, in the other direction. Like Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms is a quiet, residential town with a strong sense of community; however, unlike Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms has beachfront hotels, vacation condos, and short-term rental opportunities. Additionally, the town is less stringent with its regulations regarding remodeled homes, detached structures, and home additions. Furthermore, Isle of Palms has more commercialization including its own Harris Teeter grocery store, banks, real estate and rental offices, law firms, retail boutiques, medical specialties, and numerous service companies. Popular restaurants on the IOP include The Boathouse, Seabiscuit Cafe, Coconut Joe’s, Acme Lowcountry Kitchen, and Long Island Cafe. For live music and libations, locals frequent Banana Cabana, The Dinghy, or The Windjammer, a beachfront bar with volleyball courts, pool tables, and nightly entertainment. Other recreational activities include fishing off the IOP Pier, surfing, biking, boating, paddleboarding, searching for seashells, building sandcastles, and playing at the Isle of Palms County Park. The IOP County Park not only provides excellent parking for a day at the beach but also has a picnic area, playground, public restrooms, and lifeguards on duty. In addition, the city manages a full service marina, equipped with dockage, fuel, and a mini-mart. The city leases out commercial real estate space for kayak, parasail, watercraft, and charter fishing businesses. The City of Isle of Palms Recreation Department is ideally located on 28th Avenue and offers numerous activities and sports leagues for both children and adults. For children, Isle of Palms has its own organized soccer, basketball, baseball, and volleyball teams, and it offers acting classes, ballet, gymnastics, yoga, and tennis clinics. During the summer months and during school breaks, the department runs Camp Summershine, a fun day camp that features arts, crafts, sports, swimming, and weekly field trips. For adults, IOP has its own basketball, softball, volleyball, and table tennis teams, and it offers numerous programs such as dog obedience classes, tennis clinics, and fitness programs. The Isle of Palms Recreation Department is the epicenter of the city’s community events, too. Throughout the year, seasonal events including Holiday Street Festival, Halloween Carnival, Easter Egg Hunt, Sand Sculpting Contests, Music Fests, and Beach Runs always lend fun and fellowship for the island’s residents.

Children residing on Isle of Palms are zoned for the highly touted Sullivan’s Island Elementary School, a partial coastal environmental science magnet. The newly constructed school is perfectly situated within walking distance to the beach, thus giving students the opportunity for hands-on learning. After elementary school, children progress to Laing Middle School, a science and technology magnet located near Hamlin Plantation in Mt. Pleasant. After graduating middle school, students transfer to Wando High School, a school that continuously receives accolades for its academic rigor and athletic accomplishments.

As a result of the top-ranked schools and variety of programs for children and adults, Isle of Palms is much more than just a vacation beach town. In fact, it is a historic residential community who happily shares its beauty with visitors. The city’s historical roots begin with the indigenous Seewee (Sewel) Indians, who first inhabited this land. Like the Kiawah and Wando Tribes, the Seewee Indians welcomed the first European settlers and began trading with them. Unfortunately, Smallpox and other foreign plagues killed most of the natives. The treacherous waters of Breach Inlet unexpectedly fended off a British attack during the Revolutionary War when more than 2,000 Redcoats tried to cross the water and raid a Colonial encampment. Then again, during the Civil War, the confederate filled U.S.S. Hunley launched from the Inlet and sunk off its shore. The island itself remained mostly vacant until the late 19th century when Charlestonians began to ferry over to Isle of Palms to escape the heat and enjoy the cool, nightly ocean breezes. A resort, ferris wheel, and pavilion was built in 1912, and shortly thereafter, in 1929, the Grace Memorial Bridge was erected, thus making Isle of Palms easily accessible. Shortly thereafter, developer J.C. Long began constructing affordable homes for World War II veterans, and in the early 1970s, the Sea Pines Company began to develop an upscale beach, golf, and racquetball club -- now known as Wild Dunes Resort.
